In James Goldman's play, domestic turmoil rises to an art form amidst
the festivities of a twelfth century Christmas celebration. The
aging and conniving King Henry II plans a reunion where he hopes to name
his successor. He summons his scheming wife, Queen Eleanor of
Aquitaine, his three crafty sons, his mistress, and her brother, King
Phillip II of France. Each member of the assembled group uses
their own brand of treachery and deception to stake their claim to the
future of Henry's empire. Goldman's screen adaptation of the play,
starring Katherine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole, received an Academy Award
in 1968. By
