This bold and ambitious chamber opera explores the landscape of the
human heart, charting the shifting alliances of six lovers across three
generations in a timeless, passionate story untainted by cheap cynicism
or false sentiment. Rose, a beautiful French actress; Alexis, an
English soldier, Rose's lover for a while; Alexis' uncle, Sir George
Dillingham, an old poet who marries Rose; their child Jenny, who will
fall in love with Alexis: theirs are troubled desires and tangled
emotions flowering against the glowing backdrop of France and
Italy. This elaborate la ronde en famille is driven by an
engrossing and muscular score of pure emotional directness.
